Sorry for not providing notes on the piicture of the girl/youngwoman. The last photo shoot brought us face to face with what Malateis all about. We wanted to look for signs of hope for the childrenin the area. In the past, we just walked around looking for oursubjects. But that night, the Malate Parish provided us with twoimportant and significant guides. One was Angel, a social worker,and the other one is a woman volunteer who comes from thecommunity. The woman volunteer carried her child all through outthe walkabout, leading us to the places where the street urchinslive...in the streets, on in wooden carts which is part of a lodgingsystem for the homeless in Malate. Our guide told us "Mamaya pongalas sais, lalabas na ang mga bata. Natutulog lang po sila ngayon.Yung iba, maglalatag ng kanila pwesto magtitinda ng kung anu-ano.Yun po, pupuntahan natin. Kukunan din po ba ninyo yung mga bugaw?"None of us replied, caught by surprise. She thought we did notanswer because we did not understand the word "bugaw" She asked oneof the women around us, "Ano nga ang bugaw?" "Pemp", answered theother women. Brought us down to reality.Malate=prostitution=pedophilia.
That girl/young woman eating in the restaurant was with a "pemp".
In one of the photos, you could see about three generations offemales, the youngest is a baby... and most of them take it forgranted that sooner or later, a "pemp" will be a part of their lives.
The saddest part was that most of the children were not there thatnight. A distraught mother told us that people from DSWD came androunded up the children. They said that most of the time, these kids(like unwanted kittens)are simply taken to other places far away andleft to fend for themselves.
